Rangatiratanga

We are learning about Rangatiratanga (Leadership and initiative).

This is what we think Rangatiratanga is...
  • Helping new kids –showing them what to do and where things are
  • Doing something without being asked
  • Helping
  • Solving problems for ourselves… thinking
  • Leading by example… showing by doing
  • It is not being a bossy boots
Rangatiratanga (Leadership and Initiative) - it is all about thinking and making some choices for ourselves. 

We need to think for ourselves!!

My Reflection
I show rangatiratanga in the playground by: helping those in need. I take them to the duty teacher or help them get an ice pack.

I show rangatiratanga in the classroom when: I follow my i time card in reading and maths

It was really hard when: to makes sure I am always doing what I need to and my very best.

What a great reflection, it is tricky to make sure you are always trying your best but that is how you can lead by example. Remember initiative is all about making some choices for yourself, have a think and then have a go.

Using what I know

Reflection

Thinking about what I already know helps me because: I think about some stuff that might be in the book, it gets me ready to read.

It was really hard when: I don't know anything about what the story is about.

Something that really helped me was: The talking at the start becasue we can ask and answer a few of the question before we read it.

Something new I learned was: thinking about what I am going to read before I start helps me becasue I can understand my story better.

We do a lot of chatting before we start reading. That helps us to 'engage our prior knowledge' and think about what we already know so we are ready for reading and learning.  It helps us to understand our reading. Remember to listen to the ideas and thinking of others in the group, we can all learn from each other. I know that you are a great reader so your next learning step is to work together with your group - sometimes you are the leader and sometimes you are not.

Fractions and Problem Solving

We have been learning all about fractions and what a fraction is. We decided that a fraction is fair. It needs to be the same shape, same size or the same number. 
We have also been doing loads of thinking and problem solving in our maths. We think problem solving is hard but we are very proud of our learning!

Reflection

My favourite part was: doing the tricky problems because they really made me think.

It was really hard when: I didn't know where to start to solve the problem. 

Something that really helped me was: using the materials like the jelly beans and the teddy bears because I could count them to finger out the answers.

Something new I learned was: materials can help me.

What great learning Caleb - materials are a great help to show your thinking and to help solve tricky problems. You have a great understanding of fractions and you can find fractions of sets and shapes and count in halves. You know that fractions are fair shares - the same size, same shape, or same number.
Remember when problem solving, slow down and think about what the question is asking and then think about what you already know. Lots of thinking and drawing pictures can help you solve tricky problems.

My Mum


In High5 we have been practising writing to describe. That means we are trying to get the reader to see what we see, we are using our words to create a picture. We have been adding details to our writing to help make the picture clearer.

Task:
Our job is to do this planning and write our own story about a person in our family that is special to us.

Success Criteria:

Reflection

My favourite part was: writing my story because it made me remember all those special things I did with mum. My mum is really special.

It was really hard when: planning because I just wanted to write. I had no plan so it made it hard to make sure my ideas were in order.

Something that really helped me was: doing other describing writing so I knew what to do. Rereading my story helped so I could add more details.

Something new I learned was: it is really important to add details to help my reader.

I am pleased that all the other describing and adding details writing we have done helped you to create this piece. What great learning for you; you learned how important is is to have a great plan (so you can capture your ideas and write them in order) and how important it is to add details (to help the reader 'see' into your brain. I think you normally plan your writing, but you could add some more details so that is why I gave you a yellow.

Wearable Arts

We have been learning all about design on our way to create our wearable art garment. We started with some challenges…
1. In teams create and build the tallest tower

Our tower is the tallest, but we didn't finish in time.
We worked together; sharing ideas and helping each other. We have learned that it is really important to design and plan our creations before we start. This means we all know what we are trying to make.
2. Build a shelter for Leo our class bear



We learned that it can be very tricky to work in groups and we all have to take turns.
3. Work together to create a costume for 1 member of our team to model.

We remembered that it is important to design our work before we start. We also learned that we have to be careful with our materials, newspaper and tinfoil rip quiet easily.

We are going to use what we have learned to create our wearable arts garment.

Reflection

My favourite part was: showing off my garment at the reagent because I my family could the details and hard work I put into my work.

It was really hard when: finding the materials I needed like the bubble wrap and the fabric.

Something that really helped me was: the parents coming in to help especially my mum.

Something new I learned was: that wearable arts are something you cannot buy because it is art and you can use all sorts of stuff like bubble wrap, fabric and feathers.
Reflection
What a fantastic Kakapo Caleb. I can see you and mum had a great time working together to creat those fabulous wings. You are a great learner and you listened to the ideas of others and then added your ideas to create an amazing piece of wearable art.
It can be tricky to stick to your plan. Part of the learning in technology is that you need to change and grow your ideas. Perhaps next time you can add some more details to your plan so you know what to bring and how you are going to go about your making.
